Your first Brazilian wax: a no-surprises guide

Almost every first-time client books their first Brazilian with two questions in their head: how much does this hurt and what actually happens once I'm on the table? The honest answer to the first one is "less than you think." The second one is what this guide is for.
Before the appointment
The single biggest factor in how comfortable a first Brazilian feels is hair length. Aim for about 1/4 inch (6 mm) — roughly 2 to 3 weeks of growth after your last shave. Too short, and the wax cannot grip; too long, and the experience is uncomfortable.
Other prep that matters:
- Skip retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid on the area for 48 hours. They thin the surface skin; wax can lift that thinned layer along with the hair.
- Gently exfoliate the day before with a soft mitt. Skip the morning of — over-exfoliated skin is more sensitive.
- Skip caffeine and alcohol the day of. Both raise skin sensitivity.
- Take ibuprofen 30 minutes before if you find waxing uncomfortable. Optional but helpful for first-timers.
- Arrive freshly showered. No lotion, oil or deodorant on the area.
- Wear loose clothing for the trip home — a flowy dress, skirt or wide-leg pants. Tight jeans + freshly waxed skin = friction = irritation.
What actually happens in the room
A first Brazilian at Veloura takes about 25 minutes. Here's the appointment minute by minute:
0–2 min — Settle in
Quick consult with your technician — any allergies, medications, recent sun exposure, retinol use. The room is private and warm. You can wear your underwear (we work around it) or remove it; entirely your call.
2–4 min — Skin prep
Pre-wax cleanse with a gentle antiseptic, then a thin layer of pre-wax oil. The oil creates a barrier between the wax and your skin so the wax grips hair only. We use premium hard wax for Brazilians — the gentlest option for the area.
4–18 min — The wax itself
We apply, set, and remove the wax in small sections — outer thigh first to warm you up, then mons (the front), then the labia line, finally the perineum and (optional) buttock strip. Each individual pull is about 2 seconds. The total "sharp" time across the full appointment is maybe 60 seconds.
18–22 min — Touch-ups + tweezing
Your technician finishes any stray hairs with tweezers. This is the "final 5%" that turns a good wax into a clean wax. Tweezing is mild compared to the wax itself.
22–25 min — Soothing finish
An after-wax serum to calm any redness, plus a quick mirror check if you want one. You're done.
On the pain — honest version
For most first-timers, the pain is sharp but brief. Each pull is about 2 seconds, and the most sensitive part of the entire appointment (the labia line) is roughly 60 seconds of total "sharp" time. Compared to what people imagine, it's usually milder than expected.
What helps:
- Schedule for 5–7 days after your period if your timing is flexible. Skin is least sensitive at that point in your cycle.
- Take an ibuprofen 30 minutes before the appointment.
- Breathe out as the wax is pulled — clenching and holding your breath makes it worse.
- If you have very sensitive skin, ask about Brazilian Sugaring instead — same price, often gentler experience.
By your second or third visit, hair regrows finer and the experience is noticeably easier than the first time.
Aftercare that actually matters
The first 24 hours are about preventing irritation. Day 3 onward is about preventing ingrown hairs.
First 24 hours: skip hot showers, saunas, hot tubs, gym sessions, sex, and tight clothing. Pat dry instead of rubbing. Apply a soothing serum if there's any redness; most settles in 30 minutes.
For 48 hours: no retinol, no glycolic/salicylic acid, no chemical exfoliants on the area.
Day 3 onward: gently exfoliate the area 2 to 3 times per week with a soft mitt or a chemical exfoliant containing salicylic or lactic acid, and moisturize daily with a fragrance-free lotion. This is the single best thing you can do to prevent ingrown hairs. Most ingrowns are caused by friction plus dryness — solving both prevents them.
The questions clients ask but rarely say out loud
"Will my technician judge me?" No. We do dozens of Brazilians a week. Bodies, hair patterns, colours and grooming habits are completely normal to us. Truly.
"What if I get aroused?" It rarely happens — the appointment is brisk, focused, and anything-but-romantic. If it does happen, your technician is a trained professional and won't make it weird.
"Can I shave between appointments?" We strongly recommend not. Shaving creates blunt hair tips that are more likely to curl inward and cause ingrowns. Stick to the 4 to 6 week cycle and let the hair regrow untouched between visits.
"Should I tip?" Appreciated but not required. Most clients tip 15–20% if they're happy.
Wax or sugaring for your first?
If you're torn, the short version: try hard wax first. It's the standard, the most efficient, and most clients are happy with their first experience. If you've had bad waxing experiences in the past or have very sensitive skin, ask about Brazilian Sugaring at the same price point. The full breakdown is in our Sugaring vs Waxing in Vaughan comparison.
